Here is an example of a visual learning application that can serve as a "Way of Knowing". This young man offers a very clear example of a visualization, captioned with verbal language that helps the "student" learn a difficult task of concentration and tactile manipulation (working with your hands and brain to produce a product)! :)

Overview - End of Week 2
Sooooo, it all started with "Vamos a traducir--->Hay las cosas que tu sabes y sabes que las sabes, etc." to Dr. Rood barks like a lazy dog while quick brown fox jumps repeatedly over him...drawing images, writing sentences (language of your choice), writing in the soon-to-be-extinct cursive form, to google images and computer fonts of your choice. Cryptograms! Then...cryptogram competitions where groups create cryptograms and challenge each other to decipher that of another group (Translate, Decipher, Decode) REDUX! :) (fun conversation). PS I love this class! (How many of you read this post? lol) Next, Case Scenario: "You have two friends who work at Home Depot...one smokes pot, the other snorts cocaine..."Which one will lose his/her job first?" Why? Discussion. Then, "How To! ...make a paper football"...aka Visual Learning 101. Finally: "Sex, Salad Bars, and Antelope" ...What is the connection? Conclusion?...TBD (to be determined).
You're the best!
Enjoy

Our ability to communicate is kind of important
Today, for the first real class meeting of SCI 105, I did one of the most uncomfortable things that I have EVER done in class. I tried to interact with a group of students who didn't know me very well...WITHOUT SPEAKING! For anyone who knows me, I am not a shy or quiet person...and I love to talk to people and tell stories, and hear stories, and, and, and,... So here we are, we're all a tribe of "primitives" without language or art.
The goal? Try to convey that: "The swift red fox jumps over the lazy brown dog" without language. So three groups of four students (including me as one of the group members) are trying to share this knowledge with the rest of our tribe.
Did it work? YES! Phew! What a relief. Imagine how the rest of our class would have gone if we had not succeeded at this task? Awkward! :) But instead, we all succeeded, I think we had fun doing it, and we got a chance to know one another a bit better...through laughter and self-humiliation!
We also introduced ourselves to one another in one big loop...introduce, shift to the right, introduce, shift to the right. What an icebreaker...I have to say that I was surprised at how much and how wonderfully everyone interacted in this...we got so loud in the hallway, I'm sure that Dr. Lee had "fun" trying to teach physics next door!
This class is AWESOME...I can feel it. You are such an important part of the success of this class and I can't thank you enough for humoring me and having fun with these goofy things. There will certainly be ... more ... to ... come!
Cheers!

Hey Everybody,
I hope you had a good time in class today. Also, please try to think about the meaning of our exercises. Our ability to communicate and convey information is such an important aspect of being who we are and the society in which we live. Believe me, I was scared...trying to make this exercise work without letting myself talk (thanks for the teams that helped facilitate this), AND thanks to everybody for being engaged in the activity. Participation is an important part of keeping this class fun so it doesn't turn into a bunch of boring lectures.
The blogs...I have linked the blogs that many of you have shared...the "josemarti" one can't be used because someone else already has it and has blogged extensively about the war in Iraq. Some others have not yet been created, but the links are there.
Please feel free to surf through each other's blogs...some of you are already jumping into it, "expressing your individuality, as it were"! :) One thing about blogs, please make sure to follow the accepted standards of netiquette (i.e. this will be especially important if we are discussing difficult subjects on-line...i.e. abortion, global climate change, cloning, stem cell research, etc.).
The first blog topic will be due on Friday, January 21st. Here is the content for your first blog:
1) Explain in about three sentences the idea that our ability to communicate is a critical part of our "ability to learn and to know'
2) Post a hand-drawn picture of "The swift red fox jumps over the lazy brown dog"
3) Post this phrase written in the language of your choice in the way that you would typically write/document this information.
4) Post this phrase written in english cursive.
5) Post a picture of an old-fashioned typewriter that would be used to type this sentence.
6) Post a picture of a swift red fox jumping over a lazy brown dog.
7) Post this phrase typed on your computer in the font of your choice.
These items should all be included in a single "post" on your SCI 105 blog. If you have difficulty with any aspect of this, please let me know because I am sure that you will not be the only person with the same question! :)
See you next Wednesday!
Brian
